Lemtek UI Appointed by WALUBI and the Ministry of Culture to Conduct the Detailed Engineering Design and Reconstruction Supervision of Kedaton Temple and Koto Mahligai Temple at the Muarojambi National Cultural Heritage Area
The Muarojambi National Cultural Heritage Area (Kawasan Cagar Budaya Nasional/KCBN), located in Muaro Jambi Regency, Jambi Province, with a total area of approximately 3,981 hectares, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. The site represents a major center of Buddhist education and civilization from the 7th to the 13th century CE. Muarojambi was officially designated as a National Cultural Heritage Area through the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 259/M/2013 dated December 30, 2013.
The Ministry of Culture and WALUBI (the Indonesian Buddhist Community Representation) are collaborating to develop Muarojambi as a historical tourism destination and a global religious tourism center. In recent years, the National Vesak Day celebration has also been regularly held in Muarojambi in addition to Borobudur. Two temples—Kedaton Temple and Koto Mahligai Temple—which form part of the site's main structural complex, are currently the focus of a major government-led revitalization effort.
In support of the revitalization of Kedaton Temple and Koto Mahligai Temple within the Muarojambi National Cultural Heritage Area, WALUBI, upon recommendation and approval from the Ministry of Culture, has appointed the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), to carry out the Detailed Engineering Design (DED) and supervise the reconstruction of the two temples. To facilitate this initiative, FTUI has assigned the Institute of Technology of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (Lemtek UI), a specialized operational unit within the faculty, to execute the project.
On Friday, February 13, 2026, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Culture’s Building E, 2nd Floor Meeting Room to discuss and present the conceptual design and work plan for the DED and reconstruction supervision of Kedaton Temple and Koto Mahligai Temple. The meeting was attended by Prof. (Hon) Dr. Fadli Zon, MSc, Minister of Culture; Dr. Restu Gunawan, M.Hum, Director General for Cultural and Traditional Heritage Protection; I Made Dharma Suteja, M.Si, Director of Cultural Heritage; Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, PhD, Dean of FTUI; Dr. Evi Anggraheni, MT, Manager for Cooperation, Ventures, and Entrepreneurship at FTUI; Dr. Erly Bahsan, M.Kom, Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering FTUI; Dr. Wisnu Isvara, MT, General Manager of Lemtek FTUI; Dr. Miktha Farid Alkadri, M.Ars, Head of CCIT FTUI; Prof. Dr. Cecep Eka Permana, an archaeologist from Universitas Indonesia; and Carren Chaterina, M.H., M.Kn, representing WALUBI, along with representatives and technical teams from the Ministry of Culture and FTUI.
The conceptual presentation and work plan were delivered by the Dean of FTUI and followed by an in-depth discussion and question-and-answer session. During the meeting, it was agreed that WALUBI would finance the project and provide supervision, while the Ministry of Culture would provide direction and monitoring for the activities carried out by FTUI through Lemtek FTUI.
A subsequent meeting took place on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at the FTUI Leadership Meeting Room to conduct clarification discussions and negotiation sessions. Lemtek FTUI will begin the Detailed Engineering Design for the reconstruction project, prioritizing Kedaton Temple over a period of three months. This will be followed by the on-site reconstruction phase, which will run in parallel with the DED preparation for the reconstruction of Koto Mahligai Temple. It is expected that the reconstruction of Kedaton Temple will be completed before May 2027, allowing the temple to serve as a venue for the National Vesak Day commemoration.
